Benefits of the battery ignition system

The battery ignition system is a type of engine that consists of one large battery with spikes and coils on the top and has an external charge device. The magneto ignition system is a type of engine that contains a force, pressure, or current acting on a rotor to produce rotary motion. These two systems have different benefits. The reasons for this are vary. According to Chevron, the major benefits are the need for no spark knock and the possibility of fuels other than gasoline to power an engine.

The magneto ignition system

Engines with the magneto ignition system use a magnet that spins an armature containing an electrical coil within it. This armature is then mounted in the head of the engine cylinder. Energy supplied by a battery on its way to the spark plugs sets off this rotating armature. The magneto ignition system is a system that requires cranking or engine turning to generate the spark needed to jump-start the combustion chamber and to start the gas-fueled internal combustion engine by means of an electric generator, which changes mechanical energy into electrical energy and back. The magneto uses a flywheel to store energy and it provides mechanical power accordingly. A magneto also comes with a pivoting armature which is mounted on top of an iron bar.

The magneto ignition system combines a number of three-phase alternating currents, while the battery ignition system uses a single direct current. The producer in the magneto ignition system is a dynamo stationary to create magnetic fields that consume electrical energy and convert it into mechanical movement.

Comparison of the systems

Mercury engines do not require electricity to fire up the spark plug, while gasoline engines require a spark. The ignition system used in a battery is called a stop-gap magneto or hall-effect current breaker operation. The advantages of using this less complicated and unscrupulous method are that it doesn’t collect harmful emissions and the vehicle has no starting levers on its flooring.

There’s a large degree of difference in the way that each of these systems work. The battery ignition system turns an electrical current into heat. It then uses this process to start the engine with minimal moving parts. The magneto ignition system converts mechanical energy into an electrical current that can then be used to activate a spark plug.


Using a battery ignition system, gas is completely combusted by a combustion engine into various co-products before reaching the cylinders. This sparks transforms chemical energy into heat and kinetic energy. The magneto ignition process produces less heat generation at all operating conditions but it does result in more consumption like fumes generated during combustion processes. Instead of burning the exhaust gases into useful products all gas usage is wasted and only discharged directly through tailpipes into the atmosphere.

The battery-ignition system allows an engine to begin running without a key or starting push. Instead, cranking makes a generator through power created in the ignition and wire network. The magneto ignition system is an older engine that provides a spark and fuel mixture

Regardless of the type of system, both the Battery-In-Line Ignition and Magneto systems emit sparks at regular intervals. These sparks often ignite fuel vapors and thereby create a fire within the combustion chamber. With either electrical or mechanical ignition, multiple sparks can be achieved by use of a distributor cap and spark plug wires.
