A battery’s cycle also known as its usage or discharge cycle is how many times a battery can be used before it needs to be recharged. Chargers are typically rated in hundredths of a kiloHrs and commonly set to 50% battery life to use three cycles per day. Tesla recommends charging with 120% capacity if your car has a special mode called Pulse charging. (Note: Electric cars rely on lithium ion batteries.)

When a battery charges and discharges, it can be measured in the amount of time a single process takes. This process is called one cell’s charging-discharging cycle. A complete cycle lasts around 10% longer that an average 3.2 hours per day. A 5 hour charge may last only 2 hours when charged to 50%, meaning 8 cycles would need to be completed in order to fully charge/discharge the battery.

Do I need a battery cycle counter?

Battery cycle counters are used in shops to calculate the wear and tear of a battery. Knowing how many cycles a battery has been through will allow you to estimate the lifespan of the battery.
